Former Site of the 146th Shinyo Special Attack Boat Unit Base

Former Site of the 146th Shinyo Special Attack Unit Base ~Special Guided Tour~

A tour exploring the history of Higashi Matsushima and Miyato Island, starting from the site of the final base of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s “Shinyo” special attack boats.
“Shinyo” were approximately 6-meter-long special attack boats that were secretly developed during the Pacific War in preparation for a potential landing of U.S. forces on the Japanese mainland. They carried explosives and were operated by pilots who would steer the vessels into enemy ships to detonate on impact. It is said that many unit members lost their lives before deployment due to accidents or attacks during transport.
The Shinyo never launched from the inlet on Miyato Island before the war came to an end. Local residents, who had been forbidden from approaching the area, learned of the base’s existence only after a considerable amount of time had passed.
Enjoy an expertly guided tour of the history of the base, Miyato Island, and Higashi Matsushima.
