Plan Details

On the last Saturday and Sunday of every July, the Kurikoma Float Festival is held. This experience is a special limited-time opportunity to view the floats made for this festival.

Begun during the Edo period (1603–1968) as a means of praying for an abundant harvest, the Kurikoma Float Festival boasts a nearly 300 years of history. The 9 districts construct new floats each year featuring scenes from various tales, tied together by a theme.

Although the floats can usually not be seen until the day of the festival, this year is different. From the end of the festival in July through the float dismantling in November, visitors can view the floats up close. This is a valuable cultural experience in which visitors can view the elaborate structure of the floats and brought to life through the passion of local residents, and hear directly from the local people themselves. With the float theme changing every year, we recommend joining an experience to participate in the construction of the following year’s floats to see and compare the differences.
