A hands-on experience at Tadami Kogyosho (established 1836). Guests use a tatami craftsman's tools to create their original mini tatami mat, selecting from about 10 kinds of bases and over 300 styles of borders. Afterward, participants use the completed mat as a tray to enjoy tea and sweets in the shop, which is scented with igusa rush.

Established in 1836, Tadami Kogyosho is a tatami mat maker with a long history. They receive orders from domestic as well as international clients. They handle standard- as well as curved-design tatami mats, proposing many different design options to suit the changing times.
This hands-on experience offers guests the opportunity to use the tools of a tatami craftsman to make their own mini tatami mat. Select from some 10 kinds of tatami mat bases, and over 300 styles of tatami mat borders. After selecting your base and border, make your original mini tatami mat—the only one like it in the world! Receive instruction from a tatami craftsman, even first-timers will feel at ease with the crafting process. Then, take a break at a tatami table and bench, using your completed mini tatami as a tray to enjoy tea and sweets. Pass some time relaxing in our shop, a modern space redolent of igusa rush.

1. Check in (Simple explanation of mini tatami making)
2. Explanation of tools use and precautions
3. Selection of materials from workshop: Mix and match materials from the workshop to find a combination you like
4. Making of mini tatami: A Tadami Kogyosho staff member will lead the workshop
5. After you finish making your mini tatami, take a break: Using the mini tatami you have made as a tray, enjoy tea and sweets in the factory shop, a modern space redolent of fresh, grassy igusa rush6. Take your mini tatami with you as a memento
Option: (Time required: about 30 minutes) For an additional fee of ¥2,200 per person, in addition to mini tatami making experience listed above, it is also possible to learn more deeply about the history of tatami with a lecture and demonstration of tatami artisan techniques, followed by trying your hand at the needlework used to stitch together the straw base of the tatami. More specialized experiences are available upon request; contact us and we will be happy to discuss details such as content and length.
